Welcome to Canterbury's best kept secret

Terrace Station at Hororata is steeped in history and is one of New Zealand's most important heritage properties. Extensive lawns, winding pathways, magnificent trees, beautiful shrubs and mass planting of bulbs and perennials, all provide you with a magical place to visit at any time of the year. It was the primary home of a prominent pioneering politician, Sir John Hall, his wife Rose, Lady Hall and their family. Family members still live in and care for the property.

John Hall was one of the foremost figures in nineteenth century New Zealand politics. His most notable achievement was the leadership of the parliamentary campaign which, in 1893, won all women in New Zealand the right to vote in elections.

Farm buildings and displays tell the story of the development of the pastoral and agricultural industries in New Zealand. Groups can book to visit and see some of the farm buildings and museum displays in the homestead. The garden is open to visitors during spring and summer; children will love playing hide and seek!

Check our Facebook and Instagram pages for information about open garden days, photos and updates from Terrace Station, and contact us if you have any questions.

We look forward your visit.
